This policy describes how SquaredAway collects, uses, and protects personal information. We comply with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, where applicable, provincial privacy legislation.
We collect two categories of information. First, publicly sourced directory data: contractor names, business addresses, phone numbers, websites, permit histories, and license information imported from Canadian municipal open-data portals and regulator registries. Second, account information that you provide directly: email address, password (hashed), contractor profile details when you claim a business (bio, highlights, past project photos), and job-posting details if you post work as a homeowner.
Directory data is used to populate public contractor profiles, power search, and derive specialty tags. Account information is used to authenticate you, let you manage your listing or job posts, and communicate with you about your account. We do not sell personal information. We do not use third-party advertising trackers.
We use a small number of cookies and browser storage entries strictly to keep you signed in, remember your language preference (English or French), and operate the application. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or cross-site tracking.
Directory data is retained as long as the profile is active. When a contractor deletes their account, we remove the user account and revert the profile to its open-data baseline (the business remains discoverable as a public record). Claim-request records are retained for audit purposes. You may request deletion of all personal information at any time.
Access to account data is restricted, passwords are stored using industry-standard hashing, and all traffic between your browser and our servers is encrypted in transit. No system is perfectly secure, but we follow sensible practices and promptly patch issues when we find them.
Under Canadian privacy law you have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, request correction of inaccuracies, request deletion, and withdraw consent for specific uses. To exercise any of these, email us at the address below — we'll verify your identity and act on the request within 30 days.
If we make material changes we will update the "Last updated" date above and, if you have an account, notify you by email before the change takes effect.
Privacy questions, access requests, or complaints can be directed to [email protected]. If we cannot resolve your concern to your satisfaction, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca.
